A thorough cleaning at the time the system is installed is necessary, but after that it shouldn't be necessary to do so unless the water becomes obviously discolored or visible scale starts to form on the outside of pipes, valves or fittings. Boilers use a fuel source: oil, gas, propane, or electricity to heat water to just below a boil between 160 degrees and 180 degrees. This heated water is sent through pipes throughout the building into radiators built in all of the rooms. As the hot water passes through the pipes in the radiators the pipes get warmer and emit the extra heat into the room.
